Stephen Carruthers studied art at Glasgow School of Art from 1979 to 1983 where he graduated BA Hons. He has been a professional artist for many years and today works from his studio in the West of Scotland and in France where he enjoys the scope to work en-plein air, sketching his subjects in pastel before developing the themes into oil paintings in the studio.

His work is distinctive for its many layers of oil that create layers and texture together with a richness of colour that often results in a tapestry effect. His subjects vary from landscapes, both in Scotland and in France, to more recently the novel painting of gardens and allotments.

Stephen has received many awards for his work including The JD Kelly Award from the GSA, The Scottish Art Club Award, and the Mabel Kinlay Award for Painting. He is an elected member of The Glasgow Art Club, an elected Council member of The SAAC and is a past president of Visual Arts Scotland.

His work features in a number of London Galleries where in recent years he has developed a keen following among collectors of Scottish artists. His exhibitions include shows at The Royal Scottish Academy, Chelsea Art Fair. Contemporary Fine Art Gallery, Eton, The Olympia Fine Art Fair, and Battersea Art Fair.

He exhibits in Scotland only on a selective basis and we were delighted when Stephen agreed to join our first major exhibition of 2009, “The Gullane Masters” and then followed that with Allotment paintings done specially for our “NOT The Chelsea Flower Show”.
