Artist Profiles - Norman Edgar RGI

Norman Edgar was born Paisley in 1948 and studied art at the Glasgow School of Art from 1966-70.

After graduating he became a teacher of art and in 1990 he left teaching to become a full time artist. He exhibited widely and held successful solo shows at The Glasgow Art Club, the Vallar Gallery in Glasgow and at Stenton Gallery. Latterly he has taken part in numerous mixed exhibitions and includes Seen Gallery London, Fosse Gallery Stow-on-the-Wold, and the Richard Hagen Gallery a his selected Group Exhibitions.

In 1991 he was elected a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and in 1993 he was appointed President of the Glasgow Art Club.

His work has gained a strong reputation in the world of portrait painting and he has Received portrait commissions from the University of Glasgow; The Trades House, Glasgow; The Archdiocese of Glasgow; The Maclean Society, ; The Royal Incorporation of Architects Edinburgh; Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow; Sir James Black; Sir David and Lady Hunt; Sir Houston Shaw Stewart; William Grant & Son; The Royal Infirmary, Glasgow; and The Royal College of Obstetricians, London.

Norman’s work is held in prominent collections including HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, Heriot Watt University, Greenock Art Gallery, Argyll Education Authority, Refrew Education Authority, Lord Morton, Guiness Plc, United Distillers, Lord Macfarlane of Bearsden, Glasgow Dental Hospital, Pitlochry, Theatre and in numerous private collections in the U.S.A, Germany and Britain.

As gallery owners we have been admirers of Norman Edgar for many years and are delighted to be able to feature his still life paintings within our inaugural NOT The Chelsea Flower Show.
