Leila Aitken only took up oil painting and sculpture after she retired from her profession as a teacher. She taught Home Economics which also included tailoring and dress making. This range of subject gave her a wide interest in art and crafts and her painting reflects her eye for detail and her love of flowers and the sea.

Over the years she has written for several magazines and presented TV craft and gardening programmes for both BBC and ITV. This was a busy period for Leila and spanned over twelve years. She is also an author having written a number of books on craft related subjects including “The Flower Arrangers Garden” published by David and Charles.

Leila is a mostly self taught artist although she has attended Edinburgh College of Art. She now works from her studio at home and is well known in the East of Scotland for her coastal scenes and seascapes, many of which have been taken to print. However it is her floral paintings that particularly appeal to this gallery and her originals are sold here on an exclusive basis.

Leila has also exhibited in a variety of galleries in Scotland and usually her work is accompanied by the sale of her prints and greetings cards. She is a prominent exhibitor at Pitlochry Festival Theatre during their summer season.

Her still life floral paintings are bright and colourful and with other subjects included such as pewter pots and china vases being painted with oil on canvas they have a traditional style and feel that graces the wall in both traditional and modern homes and stands the test of time.

We are pleased to add Leila’s work to our regular exhibition portfolio.
