Ethel Walker was born in Ayrshire in 1941 and studied Art at Glasgow School of Art from 1959 – 61.

Over the years she has held countless solo shows and has featured in many group exhibitions in some of the finest commercial art galleries in the UK.

In the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s her solo exhibitions were shown almost exclusively in Scotland where she developed a strong following of collectors and enthusiasts.
As her popularity grew she became in demand in London and Eton. Over time Ethel began to concentrate her efforts on only selected galleries namely Flying Colours Gallery, Thakeray Gallery both of London and the prestigious Roger Billcliffe Gallery in Glasgow.

Ethel’s land and seascapes are renowned for their atmospheric feel, and living and working on Scotland’s West coast, she has become a master of painting the varied weather conditions and ever changing skies. She has been described as “painting the weather” which she acknowledges as a fair description of her work.
However it is Ethel’s floral and still life painting that has brought her to this gallery as the owners have been fans of Ethel’s work in this subject matter for many years.

Over the years Ethel has won many important awards:
1982 – Anne Redpath Award – Scottish Society of Women Artists; 1986 – Glasgow Herald Painting Competition – RGI; 1995 – Alva Computers Purchase Prize – SAAC; 1995 – Whyte and Mackay Award – SAAC Annual Exhibition;
1997 – Scottish Provident Award – SAAC Annual Exhibition; 1998 – Most well received work – SAAC Annual Exhibition; 2000 – Barclay Lennie Award – Glasgow Society of Women Artists; 2002 – Mabel McKinlay Award – RGI Annual exhibition

Her work can be found in many important private and corporate collections throughout the world.

Today Ethel limits her painting to relatively few exhibitions each year in effect making her new work even harder to source. It is with pride therefore that we received her acceptance of our invitation to show within our inaugural NOT The Chelsea Flower Show.
