Walter Awlson studied furniture design and sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art and graduated in 1971 before moving on to gain his Certificate in Secondary Education. He became a teacher and over the next 20 years developed the SCOTVEC national certificate courses in Art and Design as well as working as an Examiner, Marker, Subject Assessor and Verifier.

Early in the nineties Walter left teaching to concentrate on his own artwork both as a painter and as a sculptor. In particular he developed highly rated work in slip-cast sculpture and began to exhibit his sculptures in galleries throughout the UK. Accordingly it is for his sculpting that he has become best known although his painting, particularly his figurative work, is highly rated. More...

Olivia Brown lives and works in West Yorkshire. She graduated from Manchester University in 1999 with a first class honours degree in Contemporary Crafts and set up her studio at home.

She has held exhibitions throughout the UK and also worked on a number of highly prestigious site specific installations. One of these was the "Libre les grenouilles" shown at the Crafts Council in 2002 in which the plight of frogs in the French restaurant trade was highlighted. Another was "Elvis the whippet’s salon", a life size vintage style canine coiffeur outlet which toured the UK in 2002. More...

South African born sculptor, Michael Davies studied Fine Art at the University of Cape Town’s Michaelis School, obtaining his degree in photography in 1982. He followed this up with a master’s degree in 1987.

After working as a commercial photographer and having had numerous photographic exhibitions, Mike began working with steel about ten years ago. The works were essentially functional art forms, Guinea fowls, fish, water lilies etc. welded and crafted from mild steel with lights placed inside to reflect and enhance this.

These later developed into more sophisticated pieces using a complex Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding process involving stainless steel. More...

Michael Lythgoe (wood carver) was born in Liverpool in 1950 and left school to pursue a career in engineering with Unilever with whom he undertook an apprenticeship. Upon completion he then joined the Merchant Navy as a junior engineering officer.

He later emigrated to Canada and worked in the ship building industry. Living and working on the shores of Lake Ontario gave him time to indulge his love of bird photography particularly when canoeing on the lakes of northern Ontario.

It was on a trip to Cape Cod that he purchased an old wooden decoy which was to influence a fundamental change of direction for Michael. That decoy still features in a prominent position in his wokshop to this day.More...

John von Weise was introduced to the Gullane Art Gallery by his friend and fellow sculptor Mike Davies. They both originate from Cape Town, South Africa.

John was born in Cape Town and studied textile design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. His early years were spent among the African bushveld wildlife and his plentiful access to the wild and natural of Limpopo River left him with experiences that created a deep empathy for the veld and all her creatures.

These strong core experiences and his passion for fine art bronzing inspire and motivate John’s sculpting.More...
