Alison Dunlop was born in Canada in 1958. She began her studies there before continuing in France and later in the UK. In France she had an undergraduate year at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts and L’Universite de Franche-Comte, Besancon. She came to Scotland in 1982 to undertake post-graduate studies at Edinburgh College of Art and has been based here ever since.

Alison has exhibited widely across the UK both in Group exhibitions and solo shows, with her main centres being London and Edinburgh. She has also had solo exhibitions at the University of Guelph and in Toronto, Canada.

In 1989 she was elected to the RSW and in 1995 became a Professional Member of the Society of Scottish Artists and Artists Craftsmen. From 1997 – 99 Alison was President of SAAC (now Visual Arts Scotland). She was conferred Honorary Membership, VAS in 2003.

Her work is held in a number of prominent corporate collections including Royal Bank of Scotland; Prudential plc; Dickson Minto (London and Edinburgh); Davidson Chalmers; The Betty Davidson Collection; and a number of collections in Canada.

Alison’s painting in realism is stunningly accurate and very contemporary in subject matter – dark backgrounds and creatively clever compositions give her paintings a dramatic feel and the overall effect attracts the eye and draws you in.

Over the years, Alison has been the recipient of a number of prestigious awards, both here and in Canada, including the Alexander Graham Munro Award (RSW) and The John Gray Award (RSW).
