James Harrigan was born in 1937 in Ayr and has continued to live in Ayrshire all his life. He studied Drawing and painting at Glasgow School of Art between 1956 and 1960 and after his graduation he went on to gain a Post Diploma in Printmaking in 1961. He taught Art for many years and by all accounts was an inspiring teacher with many of his pupils going on themselves to develop successful careers as artists.

Today James is a highly acclaimed and successful professional artist and over the years has exhibited widely throughout the UK. He is known as a landscape artist but his landscapes are frequently augmented by a human presence and a sense of life being lived. He never tires of his local scenery, especially the coastline of the south west of Scotland, but at the same time he travels extensively.

James is a past winner of the prestigious Laing Landscape Competition and also The Scotsman Art Competition. He now exhibits mainly in London where he has developed a keen following for his work with a number of highly successful solo and joint solo exhibitions. His work is in many important collections including those in the House of Lords, Glasgow University and the Maclaurin Gallery.

As gallery owners we have long been admirers of James’s work and have pieces in our own private collection. We are delighted to have secured James’s work for inclusion in “The Gullane Masters” exhibition and we hope he will be a regular contributor to the walls of the gallery in the future.
